I've noticed that my car makes a high pitched screeching noise when it is being driven at night in lower gears?

I have a fiat seicento S reg, and it makes this screeching noise until it gets to 4th gear, it may sound odd but this only happens when it's dark outside?? I thought it may have something to do with the engine being cold, does anyone know what could be causing this? thanks
