How to execute php code ? Suggest compiler or ??

I am a beginner in php and trying to learn php from it's basics... I studied some code but i did'nt know how to execute it on computer...I searched on internet but they are saying that just save your file with php extention and server will automatically create a web in browser... Can i use compiler or what can i do ?????/ OS = win xp sp-2
