Laser tag, Making a countdown computer/lcd screen device?

I want to make a laser tag system and i was wondering how you would go about setting up the electronics that would do this: have a small lcd screen with number 10 on it, and every time the infrared receptor receives signal the number goes down by 1? (these would be the lives, and the signal would be the infrared beam from the opposing gun) Thanks
